In this cycling excursion, we will get familiar with Štajerska, a land which until the end of the World War I was a part of the Austro-Hungarian region with the same name. This landscape is a combination of Subalpine mountains, wine-growing hills and planes with numerous thermal and mineral springs. A chance to enjoy in nature, views of castles, and tastes of the traditional cuisine will present itself during the excursion.

The planned route runs on a plane surface, and will be leading along three rivers. The cycling stages of the first and second day will mostly take place in the valleys of the Sava and the Sotla which are natural borders of Štajerska to the South and to the East, and the way will also lead beyond the Sotla. The finishing stage of the excursion will occur in the Dravinja Valley which offers numerous cycling routes. This cycling adventure is suitable for those who want combine recreational cycling with discovering of natural and cultural heritage, as well as gems of traditional Slovenian cuisine.

DAY 1

The transportation will take us from the airport past Sevnica to Lisca, a 947 m high peak in the eastern part of the Sava Hills which in beautiful weather offers a view of the entire country . The hill is a popular destination for paragliders, and also an important  location in the history of Slovenian mountaneering and hiking, since the third mountain lodge in Slovenia was built on Lisca. Welcome drink and introduction of the accompanying team is followed by the presentation of the excursion, dinner and overnight stay in the lodge.

ALONG THE SAVA AND SOTLA RIVER

After breakfast, the excursion starts with descent from Lisca to the Sava, Slovenia’s longest river and the natural border of Štajerska to the South. After few kilometers of cycling on a marked cycling path we ascend to the castle Rajhenburg which is located on strategically significant spot above the Sava. Shorter ascend is followed by the visit the castle which was built in the 12th century by the bishops of Salzburg and offered home to the religious order of Trappists from the end of the 19th century until the end of the First World War. The religious order was responsible for the construction of the first power plant in the Sava Valley and for economic development of the entire region. Among the artefacts, exhibited in the castle, Olympic medals of Slovenian hammer thrower Primož Kozmus can be found.

The excursion continues on a cycling path to Krško and then on local roads through the hills and valleys of Kozjansko Park to Bizeljsko, where the stage will be finished with good local dinner and overnight stay..

DAY 3

  • Sights: Marshal Tito’s birth house, Olimje monastery with the oldest apothecary in Slovenia, Rogaška Slatina.

ACROSS THE WINEYARDS TO THE MOST FAMOUS SLOVENIAN SPA RESORT

After breakfast  we cross the state border and continue with the cycling in Zagorje, a region of wine-growing hills and thermal springs which host numerous health resorts.  The way will lead us to Kumrovec, the birth place of Josip Broz Tito, president of Yugoslavia. His birth house is exhibited as part of the Staro Selo museum which depicts an authentic village of Zagorje from two centuries ago. The excursion continues on the right bank of the Sotla, and we re-enter Slovenia and make our way towards Olimje where a Minorite monastery is located among the hills. The monastery was initially a castle, since the beginning of the 20th Century  however, it is a home to Minorites, the younger order of the Franciscans, who offer a vivid presentation of the monastery, in which the oldest apothecary in Slovenia is opened, and in proximity of which a chocolaterie is located. After the visit of the monastery and lunch in the nearby inn, the path will lead to Rogaška Slatina where the first health spas in Slovenia were opened, due to the health benefits of the mineral water – slatina. Rogaška Slatina boasts wonderful health spa centres with a fountaine and Secession buildings. Dinner and an overnight stay follow the cycling.

The excursion contiunes on local roads to Štatenberg Mansion, a baroque mansion owned by the Attems family which is responsible for the beginning of spa tourism in Rogaška Slatina. After the visit, we continue the excursion through the Dravinja Valley and past Boč, a 987 m peak which is geologically considered the eastern most part of the Karavanke. Near Poljčane, a picnic will be organized on idyllic location which boasts an open-air classroom, the purpose of which is education about self-sufficiency and ecological methods of food production. After lunch in nature, we continue towards Slovenske Konjice. The excursion can be extended with the visit of Žiče monastery, a monastery of Carthusian monks from 12th century where among other sights the oldest inn in Slovenia finds place. Only few kilometers separate us from our goal, and the excursion finishes in pleasant atmosphere of vineyards, with dinner, wine tasting, and an overnight stay.

ORGANISATION

  • Bicycle excursions are organized on optional date, for gropups of no less than 4 participants and maximum 7 participants per guided group.
  • Due to the great density of local roads and the lack of bicycle lanes outside settlements, the bicycle tours are organised on local roads with smaller density of traffic, and partially on existing and marked bicycle lanes.
  • Because gravel roads are included in the excursions, trekking bikes are required. Optional rent of electirc bike is possible, for additional payment.
  • Participants cycle under guidance of an experienced guide.
  • Accompanying vehicle is at participants’ disposal for technical support, support with drinks and snacks, luggage transport.
  • All the stages are of medium difficulty, the length of a segment, as well as the duration of the entire excursion can be adjusted in accordance with the wishes of the group,.

The price depends on the number of participants.

PRICE OF THE EXCURSION INCLUDES:

  • rental of a trekking bike (if participants have their own bikes, the price is lower),
  • accompanying vehicle with a trailer, technical support and luggage transfer,
  • 4-night unique accommodation in Slowenian guest houses or turist farms,
  • half board ( localbreakfasts and dinners) and snacks provided by accompanying vehicle,
  • qualified bike guide for the entire trip,
  • fees (Rajhenburg castle, Old Village museum, Olimje monastery, wine tasting),
  • transfer from and to the nearest airport (Ljubljana, Zagreb).
